Cooking with Children in Vanuatu: Make Island Pudding!

Cooking with children is a great way to promote communication skills. Making an effort to talk with children and create discussion during everyday life helps build their vocabulary and confidence. Here is a simple recipe for a breadfruit and coconut pudding from Vanuatu.

What you need:

3 c. ripe breadfruit
1 c. sugar
1 1/3 c. lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. coconut milk

What to do:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees c. Scrape pulp from soft ripe breadfruit, add remaining ingredients.  Pour into buttered baking dish.  Bake 1 hr.

What to talk about:

When cooking with children it’s a great time to ask them about their day, talk about who their friends are and how they feel in different situations. As you measure each ingredient talk about where that ingredient comes from, a plant or an animal and what country. Talk about the texture of the ingredients and the taste and make predictions about what will happen to mixture when cooked.
